CALLIGRAPHY: Heart of the Brush: Upaya Zen Center Santa Fe, NM

Upaya Zen Center, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Instructor: Sensei Kaz will co-teach this special calligraphy workshop with Zen Painter and calligrapher Jin Young Lim. Roshi Joan Halifax and Sensei Wendy Dainin Lau will be stewarding this program.

Heart of the Brush promises to be a remarkable Zen calligraphy and painting workshop. Kazuaki Tanahashi, master calligrapher, will take participants deeply into the form and structure of calligraphy. Jin Young Lim, a remarkable calligrapher himself, is a scholar and close friend of Kaz’s, and will open the world of Zen painting. While practicing basic aesthetics and techniques of brushwork, we will notice our own imperfections and inner criticisms that usually keep us from fully enjoying each moment. Step by step, we will find ways to increase the degree of our enjoyment and serene excitement, which can be applied in everyday life. Using a variety of paper and brushes of different sizes, we will also experiment with artistic interpretation and expressionistic improvisation.

This is the first time we have offered this workshop, and we are so grateful that these two good friends will bring different perspectives on paper, brush, ink, and the world. No previous experience is needed, and Sensei Kaz will provide brushes and paper. Expect a lot of joy in the weekend at beautiful Upaya Zen Center.
