Are you concerned about the global climate situation that affects our lives visibly and invisibly at this perilous time? Would you like to find a way to make a positive difference? If so, there is something very specific you can do by helping to restore the Amazon Rainforest.

“Flying Rivers,” 8’ x 12’ (2.43 m x 3.65 m), acrylic on canvas, was painted on the roof of Kaz’s studio in Berkeley, California, on September 22, 2022. Zé Paiva from Brazil took sideview and drone photos of the process and posted them in Instagram and FaceBook. There have been a great number of positive responses, as people seem to recognize that we all need to work together to help plant trees in Amazon Rainforest.

I have been searching for an effective way of working together with friends across the world to respond to the climate crisis. Since 1993,I have been volunteering for Inochi (meaning “life force” in Japanese), a U.S. nonprofit peace and environmental organization based in Berkeley, California, founded by Mayumi Oda. I serve at this time in the role as president.

Friends in Brazil wanted to work together on a project that directly addresses the climate crisis, and they searched for a transparent and reputable organization that has a history of successfully working with indigenous peoples. They identify the Amazon Reforest Alliance (ARA) as the best organization that suits everyone’s requirement. Please see  www.amazonreforestalliance.org ARAand Inochi have formed a partnership to carry out the Inochi Amazon Rainforest Project

In March 2022, a representative of ARA along with our Brazilian friends, Lia and Guilherme, spent a week visiting the indigenous Puyanawa community in northwestern Brazil that will plant the seeds and seedlings. They also visited the Yawanawá people, who are Puyanawa’s mentors. A report of this trip is on our website.

I believe this is a viable and worthy project. Would you consider joining us by being a benefactor and encouraging others to work together with us? Please donate through www.inochi-trees.org. We will give you progress updates on our web site and via email.

Many individuals and organizations are working hard, conserving energy, recycling, and taking various actions. But each of us needs to do more. A single project cannot ensure the change that is needed. But if we develop a good prototype, others can replicate the project or initiate different projects with similar goals. Personal commitment, collaboration, and networking are crucial to solving the crises we face.

I look forward to working with you! Kaz
