Description:

Zen master Dogen’s thorough teaching embodies elucidations on various aspects of awakening or enlightenment. We will explore such aspects as practice and enlightenment being not separable, methods of practice, states of meditation, work practice, compassion, service, expression, living fully at each moment, facing death, transcending life and death, and transcending momentariness and timelessness. It is important to understand that the main goal of his teachings was to support an experience of unsurpassed awakening. This experience has many implications for understanding Dogen’s own life and travels to China, where he “dropped off body-mind,” his powerful instructions for the practice of “shikan taza” and maintaining a meditative state of mind, and his philosophy of engaging the “unity of life and death” based on an awareness of the impermanence of all aspects of existence.
