July Zen Circle

Upaya Zen Center, Santa Fe NM

Instructor(s): Sensei Kaz Tanahashi, Sensei Peter Levitt

The Zen Circle is a time of retreat, learning, meditation practice, participation with Upaya’s residential community in their daily schedule, and special programs within the Circle that are led by Zen teachers and/or Guiding Teachers.

Each Zen Circle includes an opening night session that includes an orientation as well as meditation instruction in the morning of the first full day.

The schedule Wednesday through Friday includes daily meditation practice 3 times a day, samu (work practice) periods 4.5 hours, one meal clean up, interviews with Guiding Teachers, weekly dharma talks, and seminars. Monday and Tuesday are personal practice days where practitioners and residents take meals on their own and have the freedom to hike, study, do laundry, and take quiet time. Participants must sit zazen (meditate) once a day on Mondays and Tuesdays but are welcome to attend all three zazen periods.

Residents and guests follow the same schedule.
